Bonifay City Council discusses cemetery ordinance, fire station renovations

During its regular session on August 18, the Bonifay City Council voted to amend a city ordinance that currently restricts the placement of benches in the City of Bonifay Cemetery. The ordinance, enacted in November 2021, prohibits the installation of benches regardless of material. Under the proposed amendment, benches made of sturdy, weather-resistant materials would be permitted.

Before the amendment can be enacted, the city will hold a first and second reading and publicize the proposed change, allowing residents the opportunity to provide input.

In other business, the council approved funding for a flooring project for the Bonifay Fire Department. The department will use the funding to refinish 4,776 square feet of truck bay flooring. The project will be completed in two parts; phase one includes the needed prep work, estimated at $13,604, while phase two—covering the final epoxy application—adds an additional $30,710.40. The council approved funding for both items, which brings the combined total to $44,314.40.
