Holmes County Public Library (HCPL) hosted Jan Mattingly, also known as the “Science Lady”, on October 30 for a Spooky Science demonstration. Mattingly, owner of Dynamic Education Adventures in Alabama, traveled to bring science to life in an engaging hands-on presentation. Mattingly brought some recognizable ingredients and some , and she performed experiments that showed chemical reactions in a safe and fun way.

Attendees were invited to test a theremin, an electronic instrument you play without touching it, by moving your hands near an antenna to control the electrical signal affecting the pitch. [ALI MORELAND | THE ADVERTISER]

In another demonstration, children learned about the process of sublimation, which is the result of watching a piece of dry ice submerged in water turn into a foggy cloud of carbon dioxide. They had a chance to feel the cool fog flowing from a beaker and hold a bubble or two of the fog. [ALI MORELAND | THE ADVERTISER]

The event gave Holmes County children a spooky but safe science exploration and a fun start to the Halloween weekend.
