Child fatally shot in Holmes County; Investigation ongoing

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday night in Bonifay in the area of Twin Lakes Drive involving two children under the age of ten.

According to HCSO, deputies responded to the residence at approximately 8:26 p.m. on April 5 after receiving a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies found a 5‑year‑old girl who had sustained a gunshot wound. Deputies immediately began life‑saving measures until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The child was transported to Doctors Memorial Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates the victim’s 7‑year‑old sibling was handling a pistol when it discharged, striking the victim. At the time of the incident, an adult was present inside the home; however, the circumstances surrounding supervision and access to the firearm remain under investigation. Following the shooting, the 7‑year‑old reportedly ran to a nearby grandparent’s home.

All parties involved have been accounted for, and officials say there is no threat to the public.

The investigation remains in its early stages, and all findings will be submitted to the State Attorney’s Office for review upon completion.

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office has extended its condolences to the family, expressing sympathy for their loss.
