Ponce de Leon honors State Championship team and cheerleaders

PONCE DE LEON – The Town of Ponce de Leon hosted a community cookout and celebration Saturday, April 17, to honor Ponce de Leon High SchoolÂ’s Lady Pirates, who brought home the 1A State Championship in February.

Mayor Shane Busby and Town Council presented the Lady Pirates with a customized basketball featuring all the players, as well as a banner which lists the members of the 2021 Championship Team and will hang in a place of honor in Town Hall. Another sign declaring Ponce de Leon as home of the 2021 Girls 1A State Basketball Champs has also been installed at the town limits to greet motorists as they enter the town.

The Council also recognized the 2020-2021 Varsity Cheerleaders for both their successful year and for their unwavering support of the Lady Pirates. The council presented the squad with a plaque and megaphone which features a photo of all of its members.

This yearÂ’s state title marked the fourth in the schoolÂ’s history and the first for the school since 2012.
