During the Ponce de Leon Town Council’s April 16 meeting, the council conducted routine business while addressing infrastructure planning, public safety concerns, and ongoing operational costs, with action taken to position the town for future financial and development needs.
Mayor Shane Busby discussed rising costs associated with the town’s current water and sewer services contract with Jacobs Engineering, which is up for renewal this fall. While noting overall satisfaction with the provider’s performance, the council emphasized the need to explore more cost-effective options and authorized the issuance of Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) to solicit proposals from alternative service providers, aiming to better manage long-term costs and reduce the financial burden on residents.
Infrastructure and safety were key topics throughout the meeting. Council members raised concerns about increased truck traffic and roadside parking along Main Street, particularly near The Lunch Box, a local business, citing potential hazards for pedestrians and children. Possible solutions discussed included additional signage, traffic calming measures like speed bumps, and parking restrictions. The council also received a presentation from Jacobs Engineering outlining the initial phase of a grant-funded adaptation plan aimed at identifying and addressing flood risks and vulnerable infrastructure within the town. The plan, which includes public input and strategic project development, was formally approved and will be funded through the Resilient Florida grant program.
Updates were provided on tree maintenance and ongoing public works efforts. Reports from PDL Athletics highlighted increased community participation, successful opening day events, and concerns regarding parking safety at the ballfields, along with discussing potential plans for future programming and community engagement activities. The fire department reported routine call volume and upcoming fundraising efforts, while utilities staff noted stable system performance. The council also approved moving forward with a Community Development Block Grant application to support future infrastructure improvements before adjourning the meeting.
Ponce de Leon Town Council will meet again for regular business on Thursday, May 21, at 6 p.m.
