A new chapter is unfolding for the Holmes County Blue Devils as they prepare for the upcoming football season under the direction of first-year head coach Ty Russ. With the arrival of Russ comes a significant shift in offensive philosophy, moving away from the long-standing Wing-T scheme in favor of a modern spread attack.
The transition marks a major change for the program, one that players say is already bringing fresh energy to the field.
“We’re running the spread more, which means we’ll be passing a lot more than Bonifay football is used to,” said junior Bowden Bailey. “We’ve got a lot of skill guys this year, and opening up the field should help create more space for the run game, too.”
The spread offense is particularly exciting for the Blue Devils’ close-knit junior class, many of whom have played together since their early youth football days. Among them is junior Rhett Boyd, who welcomes the departure from the Wing-T.
“In my opinion, the Wing-T just hasn’t worked out for us the past few years,” Boyd said. “Now we’re getting wide, throwing the ball, and bringing in athletes we haven’t had in a while — even some who haven’t played in years or are new altogether. I think it’s going to be a much better fit.”
Leading the charge under center is junior quarterback Egan Seagers, a versatile playmaker Coach Russ calls a true dual threat.
“Egan moves well, extends plays, and brings a lot of athleticism to the position,” Russ said. “That entire junior group has great chemistry. They’ve stuck together since Pee Wee football, and that bond shows. They trust each other, and that’s something you can’t coach.”
The Blue Devils will debut their new-look offense in front of a home crowd on Friday, August 22, when they take on Bozeman.
